Identity: the distinguishing character or personality of an individual.
I am used to being asked the question “Do you have a Website?” For over two years, since I left the Chattanooga Times Free Press, my answer has been the same, “It’s under construction.” This answer is the most honest way to briefly express the following sentiments I’ve prepared for this page.
I am certain, beyond my own reasoning, that once published, my Website will serve as a representation of who I am. I will have a place holder in the fleeting medium that is the Internet. I struggle with how I want to Identify myself in the marketplace and thus struggle with placing something on the Internet that is not as random or as varied as I tend to be. Perhaps my own Identity, in that sense, is under construction.
Today I may be shooting a wedding but, I assure you, I am not a wedding photographer. There are far batter photographers out there who deserve your business. Tomorrow I’ll be advocating for the inclusion of specified language for the care of amputees in the new health care reform policies and, once I arrive back at my hotel, I need to finish the article that I am writing about the inspiring life of a dying man. Tomorrow I’ll be finishing the audio edits on two projects for one my clients.
I think I am an audio gathering, documentary photojournalist who writes often and doesn’t have a problem advocating for a better world.
I am continually blessed with experiences and opportunities in my life, and I am constantly humbled by those experiences. My passport is nearly full, and there are beautiful photographs flashing in mind of the places that mark its pages, but they would have very little meaning to me without the people I’ve met along the way. It will always be about the people.
I may not be the best photographer or the best writer, the best advocate or the best producer, but I have a passion for telling people’s stories. If I have to call myself something, I will gladly except the title of storyteller.
Thank you to those who have allowed me to walk with you, to document your stories and to share your stories with others. Because you’ve allowed me this honor, I am living my dream.
